Michael Starling
Teaching Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity, Department of Management Information Systems and Supply Chain, West Virginia University
Michael Starling is a Teaching Assistant Professor of Cybersecurity in the Department of Management Information Systems and Supply Chain at West Virginia University, where he also serves as Director of Education and Training for the Cyber-Resilience Resource Center. He teaches courses in cybersecurity, systems administration, network and data communications and information security management at undergraduate and graduate levels. His teaching integrates hands-on labs, applied research, and industry-aligned certification preparation, including CompTIA Security+ and CEH.
As part of his role with the CRRC, Michael leads the center’s educational and outreach initiatives, supervising student experiential learning projects and developing training programs in collaboration with public and private sector partners. He has developed continuing education materials for water and wastewater treatment personnel and is actively building cybersecurity training programs to support critical infrastructure across West Virginia and the surrounding region.
Michael brings over 20 years of experience in information technology and cybersecurity, with deep expertise in managing Linux and Windows environments, leading IT teams, and implementing secure, scalable infrastructure. Before his faculty appointment, he served in multiple IT leadership roles at WVU, including Acting Director of IT and Lead Information Security Administrator for the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences.
